"It's the greatest thing..."

(Insert your choice miracle product here) is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

OK, I want to know who invented sliced bread, when, and who documented this historical event. ...And just how long had mankind survived without slicing their bread?

Follow-up:
I was greeted tonight upon my return home from work by the following note from my wife:
"Otto Fredrick Rohwedder is the father of sliced bread and started working on a bread slicer in 1912. In 1928 he invented a machine that both sliced and wrapped the bread so slices wouldn't go stale, much to the delight of bakers! It was all recorded in beautiful downtown Chillicothe, OH!"
