A VE-E-E-E-ERY slow decline

Today I was reading the Binghamton (NY) Press & Sun-Bulletin. The lead story was the broad-daylight shooting murder of a man in a West-side neighborhood, apparently in a drug deal gone bad. (If you're wondering, localmusician, it's Clinton Street. That says it all!)
This neighborhood went to pot decades ago. At an early age, (I'm almost 40, BTW) I knew this was a street I never wanted to take a stroll down. Anyhoo, the story develops as several folks hear 3 gunshots, and look out their storefronts to see a man bleeding in the middle of the road. Many rush out to try to help the dying man. One of them, Patricia Gaven, lamented, "This has been a nice neighborhood. We knew right away they were gunshots. ...I think it's the beginning of the end [of the demise of that community.]"

The beginning of the end? How long has this region been a social dump?? And if this is such a nice place to live and work, how were you so decidedly able to determine the sound you heard were gunshots??? Gee, when will the end finally come, in the year 2525???

Yeah, I saw the article.
Several years ago, the city dumped a bunch of money into the area in the name of "revitalization", but
apparently that didn't work.
Hey, here's an idea. Let's cut funding for the police department so there are fewer officers on the job. Then we can spend the money on fixing parking garages...
I'm about ready to move back up there and run for mayor. Apparently, anyone can do the job.

How about Bingo-town spending millions of dolalrs on a useless riverwalk project that the Mayor & cronies claim will "bring in tourists," when there's NOTHING downtown to see anymore? Boscovs (which they fight to keep on a regular basis, despite it being an empty, money-wasting cocoon 99% o the week) doesn't count.

Then there's the Arena. They can't run it well locally so they'll pay people who dont' knwo the area to come in from the mid west and run it jsut as poorly....

Lovely.

Believe it or not, I'm looking to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to escape from this Stygian abyss called "Broome County."

Love your site, and I vote for Broome County to receive the "stupy" award

Advice to anonymous: don't look to Scranton/W-B for relief. Our biggest local asset, Montage Mountain, was just sold off at dirtier than dirt cheap; the only jobs coming in are minimum-wage service-sector/retail positions, and Scranton's mayor has poured MILLIONS into a couple of parks while the downtown continues to decay behind a wall of vacant buildings, even though he's offering them tax-free for 10 years. Sure, mortgage the future to fix today.
It is extremely sad to see the Bingo area fall so far. I lived in Endicott until 1990. So much has changed, I can't believe it's the same place.
Funny you mention Boscov's. I remeber when it was Fowler's and was 99% empty like it's descendant.
The thing I miss the most is the hockey games (yes, we have an arena/ AHL team, but tickets are outrageously expensive) and the Pops on the River concerts...
